The Competition

Better_Bin_Final.jpg

How can we create a practical and efficient litter basket for New York City that reduces litter and better serves both Sanitation Workers and the public?

BetterBin is a design competition to reimagine the iconic New York City litter basket, brought to you by The New York City Department of SanitationVan Alen Institute, the Industrial Designers Society of America and the American Institute of Architects New York.

BetterBin marks the launch of Van Alen Institute’s Product Placed initiative, a new series of design competitions to create innovative civic products that improve urban life.

2019 Prototype Testing

Two design teams—Group Project and Smart Design—have progressed to Phase 2 of the competition. In summer 2019, prototype litter and recycling baskets will be tested in the following City neighborhoods:

  • Midtown, Manhattan: 9th Ave between 43rd and 45th Streets

  • Flushing, Queens: Main Street between Maple Ave and Cherry Ave

  • Parkchester, the Bronx: Castle Hill Ave between Newbold Ave and Ellis Ave
